Spring Break--Part Three

Saturday!  Saturday we again layered ourselves up (are you noticing a pattern here?) and headed to downtown Fairbanks for the GCI Open North American Champion sled dog race.  Let's just say it was one of those days that doesn't go quite as planned.  We were five minutes late for everything we tried to do and had difficulty finding a place to eat in the immediate area of where we were.  With three tired and hungry kids it made for a tense few moments.  Finally we stumbled upon a cafe and with everyone's tummies full we headed off to catch the finish of the race...since we had already missed the start by now!

My dog-mushing enthusiast kids loved watching the teams as they came by.  Loved it!  They also loved grilling my friend Stephanie about her days in the village with her dog team...

"What about..."  "Did you ever..."  "What if..."

Part of the festivies that day was this North American Weight Pull event sponsored by the Interior Freight Dog Association.  In keeping with our theme of the day, we missed the bigger dogs during our extended lunch ordeal, but we did catch a few of these smaller dogs.

And to make it a truly Alaskan event the Alaska Trappers Association was also holding a fur auction.  I am pretty sure this is one of the few places where this sort of event is still commonplace and not picketed or protested!

For dinner that evening our hostess's son and his family came over and barbequed some yummy swan & bacon appetizers as well as some moose burgers for dinner.  Potato salad, coleslaw, stuffed mushrooms, broccoli rice casserole, and cheesecake rounded out the menu.  It was delicious!!

Just for good measure, here's another cute picture of kids in pajamas...

Later that night we again left the kids for a bit and took in the most amazing display of aurora borealis that I have ever seen.  Truly incredible!

Sunday we drove home.  The kids were so tired that we made the nearly 400 mile drive in record time.  Very few stops and very little whining.  Lots of coloring, listening to audio books, and a bit of napping.  It was a great drive and an amazing vacation!  I am so glad we did it!
