Sewing

I've been doing a bit of sewing lately again...something about cooler weather finds me seated in front of my machine more and more often!  I am almost finished with a quilt that I'll share photos of soon.  I made some Oliver+S Badminton skirts for the girls and some super-simple infinity scarves for the kids and I last week and then my friend Debra and I spent an evening sewing skirts.  It actually didn't take the whole evening, the skirts were super fast!  I spent longer making the pattern (tracing a RTW skirt from Old Navy) than I did sewing it, I think!

Not the best photo, but trying to take pictures of myself is always much harder than I think it should be!  Debra and I conned someone into taking this snap of us both wearing them the next day.  The other similarities in our outfits were not planned!

In case you're wondering that's my wonky 'need to wash my hair do' there.  Special, huh?  Back to the skirts...quick, easy, and cute!!

So... stay tuned for my finished quilt pics and my next quilting project.  I have some lovely brights I've been saving...now to choose a pattern!!

Weekend Highlights

blurry phone pic...sorry!
Not a lot of pictures to share, but I am writing down some moments I want to remember...

:: catching up with summertime friends at the playground in Girdwood

:: amazing Thanksgiving program at church (yes, I cried!) with a delicious potluck afterwards

:: sermons that hit you right between the eyes

:: answered prayers are always good...when they're answered in a way that makes you laugh out loud, that's extra good!

:: birthday parties that are fun for everyone ages 1-99!

:: birthday parties that morph into Wii Just Dance parties and kids who include other kids and who even drag a few adults out to look silly with them!

It was a great weekend...a great balance of slow and busy, rest and fun.

Trapper Creek, Day 2 and Driving Home

Welcome back!  Saturday was every bit as lovely at Friday was at the cabin!  Another beautiful sunrise...

More ice skating...with Denali in the background, no less!

We put some miles on the skates this weekend.  On a side note, why are ice skates so uncomfortable?  Maybe I just have weird bony ankles, but ice skates pretty much hurt me from the moment I put them on.  It was good exercise though!

There were more walks in the woods...

Another amazing sunset...

And more late night light shows from Mother Nature...

We headed home on the early side on Sunday because I was hosting a baby shower for a friend here in Whittier.  We were treated to some pretty neat sights along the drive...

It was a fantastic weekend!  We had so much fun sharing our home and our fun with Kael.  Showing off our state to family and friends is such a treat!

A Visitor!

I was absent from this space for a bit while my brother was here visiting.  What fun we had!  We sat around and talked, baked all manner of things, and made a trip up to our friends' cabin in Trapper Creek.  It was an amazingly beautiful couple of days up there!

Friday morning dawned with a lovely sunrise...

The girls were very excited to find that our friends had a new addition to the fun...

Trampoline at 24 degrees?  Apparently!  Before long we were out skating on the lake.  Don't worry...our friends had been at the cabin the week before and drilled the ice. 8 inches thick!  There's no snow, so it was really cool to see all of the air bubbles trapped in the ice and the expansion cracks that happen as the ice moves up in the lake.

Before we knew it we were skating in the sunshine!

Friday afternoon we went for a little walk in the woods...

...when we heard a familiar sound overhead!  Sure enough our friends had popped by for a quick visit!

Kael and I were lucky enough to get to take a quick little flight around the area.  Again...beautiful!

As the sun set that evening the kids talked me into jumping with them on the trampoline.  What fun!  I haven't jumped on one in forever, but I'm not going to lie...I had a blast!!

We finished off the day watching How To Train Your Dragon 2 (fantastic movie!) and then we were treated to a light show by Mother Nature!

It was chilly...18 degrees!  But we lasted outside for about an hour.  The lights started off slowly but then really got dancing.  I was so glad Kael got to experience it...there is really no way to describe those dancing lights!

I think I'll stop now and give you a little break, dear reader!  I'll be back soon with a post about Saturday's fun!

::right now::

I am thinking...that I am glad to be home but feeling a bit restless, too...

In the kitchen...I just made this soup.  It is fantastic, amazing, delicious.  Make some and be a rebel like me and double the squash if you like thicker soups.  Yum!

I am creating...a list of things I am going to be creating this holiday season

I am going...to our friends' cabin this weekend!

I am wondering...where on earth the time has gone!  Bought these for a baby shower for a friend...amazed by how tiny these girls used to be!

I am reading...Wild by Cheryl Strayed for book club this month

I am hoping...for a beautiful weekend while my brother is here visiting

I am loving...these earrings I bought from a local today, made by her daughter

I am learning...that writing helps me process my thoughts and ideas...

A favorite quote for today..

Book Review--Look and Live

Look and Live
by Matt Papa

This book is a tough one for me.  I really wanted to like it...to love it, really!  It sounded so great!  When I sat down to read it though, I was overwhelmed.  It felt like I was having a conversation with someone who has to do all of the talking.  I felt written 'at' instead of written 'to'.  There's lots of good stuff in this book, lots of great 'sound bytes' for sure.  It just didn't read well to me.

Having said all of that, my favorite chapter was Chapter 7, Glory and Missions.  Papa says that, "Yes, worship is the fuel of missions, but worship is also the goal of missions."  It's cyclical.  That resonated with me!  Later he goes on to say that, "Love is your good at my cost.".  Yes!  Real love is putting someone else's needs above your own.  As a mother this is far from foreign to me.  Culturally though, we are trained to see love as stuff not service.  Big difference!

All in all, a good read.  Pick it up!

Book Review--To Everything A Season

To Everything a Season
By Lauraine Snelling

This book was a lukewarm read for me.  It's a good book for relaxing in the tub with.  The storyline is uncomplicated and easy to follow.  Set in the idyllic town of Blessing, it made me want to take a stroll down the main street of this serene town.  The characters seem like very nice folks, although they seem a bit too perfect to me.  The main character, Miriam, is a young nursing student who faces a choice between staying with her ailing mother and siblings or moving to Blessing to complete a year of internship.  Things (not surprisingly) fall into place for Miriam however, and she is able to move to Blessing without worrying for her family's well being.

I was a bit surprised by the ending of this story, I'll admit!  I expected we'd find out that Miriam and Trygve would end up together before the last page, but I was wrong.  Guess I'll have to tune into book two of the series if I want to find out what happens between these two!

Northern Lights

Wow!  Every time I see the aurora in action my breath is taken away.  What an amazing gift God gave us in his creation...truly beauty around every corner!  The lights yesterday morning were the most active I've seen yet.  It was so fun to watch them dance all around us.  Maybe early morning had something to do with it?  Before I've always watched them late at night.  Who knows!  Either way, they were amazing.  Here's a few of my favorite pictures for you...

Have a blessed day, friend!

Wet Snow

We had a great weekend...hope you did too!  Saturday was very laid back here in 804.  I actually spent the whole day in my PJs...even when we went outside!  No one has to know what's under the snow clothes, right?!?  I even got to take a nap...naps make me happy!

The girls wanted to go outside and play on Saturday so we gave it a try.  Not surprisingly they didn't love the snow, but we all benefited from the fresh air!

Because we believe hot chocolate is a food group (and because Kelsey's fingers were frozen) we had some hot chocolate to wrap up our disappointing outdoor adventure.  Marshmallows make everything better, right?!?  Luckily we have lots of fun snow-playing days ahead of us still!
