Playing...

This weekend we continued doing what you're supposed to do after Christmas...PLAY!  Here are  a few pictures of the kids with various stuff...

fun with cardboard, duct tape, and a Makedo set
indoor snowball fight
I wanted this game so bad as a kid...Hungry, Hungry Hippos!
some beginner cross stitch for K
some learning to backstitch for S
marshmallow catapults...
she looks so serious...doubly funny since we were cracking up the whole time!
The weather here has been icky, icky, icky!  Warm and rainy...but we had so much ice beforehand that the whole place is either a) slushy b) covered in standing water c) running water d) water over ice e) blowing 40mph with 60mph gusts or some combination of those.  Blech.  We're hoping for better weather in 2013!

A sidenote here...I came across this today. It made me cry...it resonates with me.  I'm gonna try...watch out!  Some of those pics might even end up on the blog now and then...

Christmas

I remember my birthday one summer...not sure exactly how old I was turning.  8?  9?  I. was. so. excited.  It was a wonderful day (although now I don't remember what made it so wonderful...sorry, mom...guess I'm getting old.) and at the end of it I cried.  I was so sad that such a fun, special, perfect day was over.  That's how I felt about Christmas yesterday.  From the time I got up until the time I went to bed I was having fun.  Christmas (and Christmas Eve for that matter!) were blissful days here, just as they should be.  Sledding, hot chocolate, games, crafting, napping, wrapping, excitement, Santa visits, unwrapping, snuggling, new books, new games, new crafts, family, friends, fun, amazing food.  No stress!

shrinky-dink necklaces the girls made for me at school...I love them so much!!
The girls are at such a good age...old enough to really have fun at Christmas, but not old enough that they have expectations of extravagance.  Old enough to enjoy opening gifts and appreciate people's giving.  The best part of my day was watching them give gifts to each other.  They've made gifts for one another since they were able to, but this year they were really able to grasp the idea of making something that the recipient really wanted.  They came up with their ideas on their own, I just helped it all come together.  Sweetly, they both knew what the other *really* wanted for Christmas, and they each chose to give that gift to the other.   Kelsey really wanted "a good book" she kept telling us all, so Stacy took that idea and wrote a book for Kelsey.  She wanted it to be about Kelsey, so she came up with the idea of picking pictures of K doing things she liked and then writing about them.  She picked all of the pictures and did all of the writing.  Kelsey was delighted with the finished product!

Stacy really wanted a baby doll.  I Googled rag doll tutorials and patterns with Kelsey and she chose this awesome one which turned out to be even more wonderful than I realized because it also includes a tutorial for the hair and a pattern for a dress that fits her.  Perfect!!  Kelsey drew the picture below of how she wanted her to look and then worked from her drawing when it came time to create the details of the doll.  Kelsey and I worked on it all day Saturday and then I worked on the hair in the evenings.  I had never made a doll before, so doll hair was all new to me.  The tutorial was awesome though, and she turned out great.  Stacy loves her!

Of course, there were so many other wonderful gifts, too!  Games, clothes, new backpacks stuffed with new art supplies, fun lotions, chap sticks, a cool scribble bot, a connector kit to build things out of household recycling...the list of kind and thoughtful gifts goes on and on.  We're so thankful to everyone who thought of us this holiday season!  So grateful for all of the beautiful cards and gifts.  Thank you!

I'll leave you with a few pictures from today...crafting, soup in my new pot, checkers!

Solstice

One of the things I love most about Whittier is the impromptu celebrations we have here.  When the weather clears, summer or winter, we take advantage of it!  A perfect example was Friday...the winter solstice and a big deal here in dark Whittier!  The wind stopped its seemingly incessant blowing and we put together a last minute skate party...invitations put out the community via text messages and Facebook and we're off!  Whittier Public Safety kicked in the lights and Public Works towed them over there and provided us some hot water.  Various community members kicked in cup noodles, hot chocolate, cider and such and party was had!

It was 9 degrees, but we were toasty warm and had a blast!  Happy longer days, friends!

Daybook

Inspired by this.

Outside my window...it's dark, and has been for many hours!

I am thinking...that I am feeling good about where I am crafty gifting-wise!

I am thankful...for friends, smiles, and chocolate.

In the kitchen...30 bags of peppermint bark and the fixings for holiday carmel corn.  Plans for sugar cookies with the girls!

I am wearing...jeans and a hoodie.

I am creating...memories!!

I am going...to the girls' holiday program tomorrow night.

I am wondering...if we'll be able to play outside while school's out for Christmas break--so windy lately!

I am reading...The American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin

I am hoping...for a very Merry Christmas for all of you.

I am looking forward to...delivering gifts to local friends on Christmas Eve!

I am learning...to appreciate the small things.

Around the house...there are a lot of little elving messes...

I am pondering...when to wrap gifts.

A favorite quote for today..."Sometimes we're all to quick to count down the days that we forget to make the days count."

One of my favorite things...is making people smile!

A few plans for the rest of the week:  making, giving, celebrating!

A peek into my day...volunteering at school, babysitting, painting with S, kids' gym, dinner with friends, a few rounds of Just Dance, a little sewing, a little visiting, and now blogging at 11pm!  Now, off to bed, goodnight y'all!

::weekending::

We were up to a little of this and a little of that this weekend!  The best way to share it is through photos, I think...

Here's Stacy, pretending to be "little Scott"...

The girls had school on Saturday (this happens once every December to meet the required number of instructional days and still be out for the summer the Friday before Memorial Day).  It was PJ day, so I picked up these beauties to wear.  I didn't tell anyone, though!  Scott carried the camera to school and snapped a picture of my friend Stephanie as she looked over and saw me in my ridiculous get-up! It was so funny!

The girls' class learned about snowflakes on Saturday, so they made these cool snowflakes out of pattern blocks...

Then yesterday we  headed into town for some family fun time at H2Oasis.  We left on the 9am tunnel and came home on the 3:30...and got to see the sunrise and the sunset!  The 21st is sneaking right up on us!!

The girls finally tried the big slide at H2Oasis.  You go down in a double inner tube. It's called the Master Blaster...so fun!  Stacy's such a screamer...makes me scream, too!  We had lots of fun, followed by two *very tired* little ladies.  A great weekend...hope yours was, too!

Christmas Cards

I love Christmas cards!  Way back when I used to make them all...it was so much fun to pick the design, buy the supplies and send out my handmade works of art.  Then I had a baby.  And then another baby just months later.  No more time to design, buy, or make cards...enter the photo card! I am super-proud of myself for finding copies of all of these to scan, so let's take a little walk down memory lane.    It's amazing how much and yet at the same time how little the kids have changed!

Lookie there!  For the first time ever it's a family photo!  And yup, we're all wearing rubber boots! Gotta have some fun with it, right?!?!
