From Her Sister

I have tried to help the girls make presents for each other for holidays. Often this means I suggest some things and get vetoed until finally I hit upon an idea that they like (either that or I just say "We're making X for her for her birthday."). This year though, Stacy had her own idea! It was so fun to have her come up with the idea and have such a clear vision in her head of what she wanted for her Kelsey's gift. Now you're wondering what it is, aren't you? Well here it is...a dog bed for Kelsey's stuffed dogs. A *perfect* gift for a little sister to make and give! And Kelsey loves it!

Looks like a comfy puppy, doesn't he?

Happy 5th Birthday, Kelsey!

Someone around here is five now! Although we're not having her big birthday dinner until Saturday, we still managed to squeeze in some celebrating yesterday. Here are some pictures of cupcakes at school and playdough time. Kelsey's preschool teacher lets the kiddo pick the free time activities on their birthday, so playdough was one of the things Kelsey picked. They make playdough birthday cakes and then Miss Mandy has REAL birthday candles they get to put in the cake. Who wouldn't want to get 5 playdough birthday cakes and be sung to five times!?!?!

The Letter P

Last week was letter P week in preschool. One of the things they got to do was the potato push. Enjoy the following video of my two monkeys on one of their turns!

Pajama Party!

One of the things the girls like to do is have a pajama party. They got the idea from Mickey Mouse Clubhouse one day and it stuck. A typical pajama party here involves dinner, a bath, dancing, popcorn and then maybe some cartoons or a special craft. And of course, everyone wearing his/her pajamas.

listening to the recorded book from Fishie Grandma

For a number of reasons we decided it was time for another pajama party and set the date for Sunday. We decided to invite guests for the first time, so the girls' friend Austin and his mom Stephanie joined us. As mentioned above, we ate, bathed, danced, snacked and did a craft. This time it was sock puppets from a kit we got for Christmas. What fun! We brought out the puppet theater I made them last Christmas and wrapped up the night with a puppet show...what fun!

Artist in Residence

This week the school is being visited by Joy Falls, a sculptor from Kenai. She's here to teach the kids her craft and boy are they having fun with clay! They're working to make a necklace, so the first day they played around, yesterday they worked on the pendants, so I assume beads are coming next. Meanwhile they're being exposed to terms like "line", "value", etc. and having lots of fun!

wind + snow = odd!

In case you hadn't heard it's been windy and snowing here lately. Of course, that means drifting snow! Here are some of the drifts I've seen this week, just for fun!

If these pictures make you want to curl up on the couch in a blanket, you're not alone! Just a little peek at what Whittier looks like during 70mph winds and snow...

Mountain Love

I'm sharing these just because I like 'em! I've been reading the Shutter Sisters blog a little bit lately. They're all about taking pictures that express you, what you're feeling, that tell a story, or that make you happy. Whether or not they're technically 'perfect'. I love it! They've written a book that I'm on the waiting list for at the library. I'm looking forward to my turn. are two pictures that are making me happy this week!

A Weekend Away

Ahhh! We're so refreshed after a weekend away in Anchorage! Scott's work life has been pretty hectic lately, so to give him a breather we spent Saturday night at the Homewood Suites Anchorage. This has become our favorite Anchorage hotel...although now that I say that I'm not sure we've tried any others! The rooms are clean and spacious, the breakfast is fantastic, there's an in-room kitchen to cook dinner if you want and the pool is big and (usually) not too crowded. It was pretty hectic this weekend, but we got our quality swimming time in. Like all kids, ours *love* the pool and we spend a good chunk of our time at the hotel getting ready to go to, going to, or cleaning up from going to the pool. This weekend we met some friends in town, so the pool was even more fun! On Sunday Scott and the girls swam while I got groceries (a LOT of groceries!) and then we came on home. Here are a few pictures from our weekend:

Birthday Outfit for a 5 (!) Year Old

As I mentioned last year I make the girls dresses each year for their birthday which do double duty as Easter dresses. Particularly for Stacy this year as her birthday falls ON Easter! Anyway...the dresses I was picking weren't getting much wear beyond the special day, so I decided to try something different this year and I made a shirt/skirt combo. We'll see if a certain almost 5 year old loves this as much as I do...because I think it turned out super-cute!

Sorry about the terrible photos...I was too excited to share this with you to wait for daylight! If you're wondering, I cut the flowers for the shirt with my Cricut. Love the Cricut!

Whittier Winterfest

Our coastal location makes planning outdoor events nearly impossible, but a group of hopeful citizens took a lucky guess and scheduled Whittier Winterfest for last Saturday. They couldn't have picked a better day! The weather was perfect for being outside and the turnout was fantastic!

Winterfest was held down at our new community ice rink. A dedicated group of volunteers have been maintaining the rink daily. Volunteers also decorated the rink with a banner made by the primary class at school. Still more wonderful community members provided a variety of snacks and hot drinks. There was music, a burn barrel for warming yourself, beautiful wrist streamers, and a crazy hat contest. And there were kids! Lots of kids! Skating, snacking, and having a good time. OUTSIDE! It truly was a wonderful afternoon.

As a sidenote, I'd just like to give a shout out to the McDonald Center in Eagle River. They have an ice rink and replaced their entire stock of rental skates this season, donating their old set to the community of Whittier. Their generosity is amazing and so greatly appreciated. Kelly Bender, proprietress of our local Lazy Otter Cafe lives in Eagle River in the winters and made the connection for us. She also delivered boxes upon boxes of skates to Anchorage for pickup by various Whittier residents. Whittier kids have also been the recipients of 7 boxes of hockey gear from a wonderful donor in California. The outpouring of support for our small community has been truly heartwarming!

Self Portraits

Sheesh! I've been fighting with my scanner all day trying to get these pictures to scan! Finally we are on the same wavelength and I bring to you our most recent self portraits. We did these in preschool when I was subbing on January 31.

Lookie, Lookie!

It happened last year on February 3 and this year on February 4...SUN! Shining *ON* Whittier! The sun hides behind the mountain from November-February, so we don't get direct sunlight during that time. Needless to say, when it returns (and the clouds part!) we all get pretty excited! It will take a few weeks for it to work its way up to the BTI, but after 3 months what's a few more weeks??

Just for clarification, this is the top bunk of our bunkbeds. The girls asked for help making these nests, then I walked into their room later and discovered what they had created!

Rain, rain....GO AWAY!!

Mama wants to take the kids snowshoeing! Look what arrived in my mailbox today, thanks to the wonderful EBay! Just one pair...for now the girls are going to take turns and share them. If it turns out they both love it gobs, we'll look into a second pair.

First however, we need our temps to drop and some darn SNOW! After our gorgeous weekend, it warmed up and started to rain. It's been above freezing and raining, snowing, snaining, and slushing, all week now. Enough! Whittier Winterfest is this weekend...a party at the skating rink! We really need it to freeze up again...the forecast looks promising...fingers crossed!
